There’s something quietly powerful about a truly dark night sky.
In the Yorkshire Dales National Park, darkness isn’t an absence, it’s a feature. One that protects wildlife, restores our sense of scale, and reminds us how much there still is to wonder at. At Meadow Falls, we’re proud to be part of that story and to have been approved as a Dark Skies Friendly site, supporting the National Park’s commitment to protecting and celebrating natural darkness.

What does “Dark Skies Friendly” mean?
It means we do things thoughtfully.
Lighting across the site is kept to a minimum and carefully directed, helping to reduce light pollution and preserve the night environment. It means darker skies for stargazing, but also quieter nights, better sleep, and a more natural rhythm for both guests and wildlife.
Most importantly, it reflects our belief that the best experiences don’t need to be bright, busy or loud — they just need space, care, and time.
Kicking off the season under the stars – Sunday 1st March
As we reopen for the new camping season, we wanted to start in a way that feels true to Meadow Falls: calm, welcoming, and a little bit magical.
On Sunday 1st March, we’re hosting a Stargazing Evening for guests staying with us — a gentle introduction to the wonders of the night sky, led by a visiting astronomer.
Whether you’re curious about constellations, hoping to spot planets, or simply want to experience the Dales after dark with family and friends, this evening is designed to be relaxed and accessible.
No prior knowledge needed!
Just warm layers and a sense of curiosity.
What to expect:
A friendly, guided introduction to stargazing
Outdoor observing of constellations, planets and dark sky highlights (weather permitting)
An indoor, interactive night-sky session if clouds roll in
Homemade soup and a sausage roll to keep you cosy
A fire pit finale with marshmallows and S’mores — the sweetest way to start the season
Details:
Date: Sunday 1st March
Time: 6pm
Cost: £10 per person (add-on to your stay)
How to join us

A gentle beginning
The Yorkshire Dales Dark Skies initiative reminds us that darkness is something worth protecting — not just for astronomy, but for wellbeing, wildlife, and connection.
Opening our season beneath those skies feels like the right way to begin. No rush. No glare. Just good company, glowing embers, and the quiet awe of looking up.
